Howard University Receives $2.5 Million African American Art Collection and Establishes Endowed Chair in Honor of Renowned Scholar Ronald W. Walters

Howard University has been gifted a valuable collection of African American art, worth $2,519,950, by Patricia Turner Walters in honor of her late husband, Dr. Ronald W. Walters. The collection will enhance the university's gallery and art history courses, featuring 152 pieces including original pieces, sculptures, prints, and photographs. In addition, an endowed chair for Race and Black Politics, named after Dr. Walters, will be established to further the university's leadership in emerging scholarship in Black politics. The chair aims to foster interdisciplinary collaborations on critical issues affecting the African diaspora. The announcement in Fall 2023 by the previous President Wayne A. I. Frederick, expressed gratitude for the generous gift and emphasized its significance in expanding students' engagement in current political conversations. Patricia Walters, the donor, began her collection in the late 1980s, with the pieces representing various eras, including the Harlem Renaissance and contemporary works by artists like Kehinde Wiley and Kerry James Marshall. The endowed chair and art collection was unveiled in the spring semester of 2023.
